Ó Cuív officially opens expanded HID Global Ireland Teoranta facility in Connemara-High tech industry invests, expands and creates jobs in the West

News - Press Releases

The Minister for Social and Family Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív T.D., today (Friday, 30th April 2010) officially opened the newly expanded manufacturing operation of HID Global Ireland Teoranta in the Údarás na Gaeltachta Business Park in An Tulach, Co. Galway.

HID Global, one of the world’s largest providers of secure identity solutions, announced last year that it was consolidating its eGovernment passport inlay production to its campus in Connemara. The company now houses all eGovernment product research, development and manufacturing at this base.

The company has invested €5million to allow for the increased capacity requirements and has announced forty two new jobs, bringing the number of full-time permanent and full time temporary (the company hires to meet specific contracts) jobs to 233. This development is also being supported by Údarás na Gaeltachta.

Minister Ó Cuív said “HID Global Ireland Teoranta is a key contributor to the economy of the Connemara region and this development shows that the area can sustain and support the expansion of a high-tech industry, even in these testing economic times. The high-tech products developed by HID Global Ireland Teoranta are a great practical example of what we mean when we talk about the Smart Economy.

As Minister for Social and Family Affairs, I am committed to moving people from welfare to work as speedily as possible and one of my priorities is to focus particularly on supporting people who are without work into training, education and ultimately into mainstream employment. In this context, it is heartening to see the vote of confidence, by a large multi-national company, in Ireland, more specifically in the Connemara region and in the quality of our workforce. This demonstrates again that high-end jobs can be located successfully in a rural area.”

Minister Ó Cuív concluded by thanking Údarás na Gaeltachta for their work in supporting HID Global’s expansion in Galway and wishing all who work with HID Global every success in the future.
