Statement from Éamon Ó Cuív T.D. in relation to the draft final report on flooding on the Clare River in 2009

News - Press Releases

Minister Éamon Ó Cuív has been informed by Dr. Martin Mansergh T.D. that a draft final report of the study carried out following the flooding on the Clare River in 2009 was received on the 25th June.

The draft report is currently being examined by the Joint Working Group and is expected that it would be finalised next week.  Minister Mansergh expects to receive the conclusions of the Joint Working Group in relation to the mitigation works recommended in the final report shortly thereafter.

It is expected that the Joint Working Group will recommend a major scheme of flood relief works.  A process of extensive consultation with the public and other stakeholders is statutorily required for such schemes.  It is considered unlikely therefore that the main scheme can commence this year.  However, the Group are currently actively examining what urgent interim mitigation works could be implemented before this winter, in advance of the works on the main scheme.

I am delighted with this commitment as I believe that whereas the major works are necessary, many people in the Claregalway area and other areas flooded by the Clare River would be concerned if no works were done before this winter.
