"Join in the fun on a trail near you in Galway for National Trails Day this Sunday," urges Ó Cuív
Written by Eamon Ó Cuív Tuesday, 29 September 2009
The Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív TD urges Galway people to put on their hiking boots, runners or wellies this Sunday, October the 4th and take part in one of the many free events organised for National Trails Day 2009.
A wide variety of events are planned all over the country, ranging from family-oriented walks, mountain bike trails and even water trails for canoeists and kayakers. This year's National Trails Day has been expanded from 70 events last year to 100 this year.
Minister Ó Cuív will be taking part in three events in Conamara this year:
- At 12:00 pm, the Minister will open the Beginners' Mountain Bike Ride at the Derroura Mountain Bike Trail, 8km west of Oughterard on the Clifden Road (N59).
- At 2:00 pm, Minister Ó Cuív will open the walking and cycling events at the Cong / Clonbur Woods woodland trails. These trails have recently been marked and mapped and are unique in that they have underground passes beneath main roads. As well as the 3-hour walks and cycles, shorter nature walks will also be available in each village for families with buggies. Refreshments and shuttle bus will be provided.
- At 3:00 pm, the Minister will join in the walking and cycling events at Clonbur.
" National Trails Day was a great success last year, and from the volume of queries received and the variety of events organised for this year, it appears to be going from strength to strength," said Minister Ó Cuív. "In Galway alone, we have guided family bog walks, coastal, woodland and island walks, mountain bike trails and a canoe trail. All the events are free and there is something to suit every interest and level of ability, so I urge people to get out and about and join in the fun this Sunday."
