Éamon Ó Cuív T.D., Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, announced today (8/10/09) that he has sanctioned €378,380 to Conradh na Gaeilge, Nenagh, Co. Tipperary, to carry out restoration work on "Dún Mhuire". The works to be carried out will include: restoration of the roof, indoor and outdoor plastering, a new ceiling indoors, as well as new floors.
Announcing the grant, the Minister said: "Dún Mhuire has been Nenagh's Irish language centre for many years. The building is used to provide Irish-language services to the community, for example, Irish-language classes for adults, meetings and music, poetry and drama evenings that are held regularly. When this work is completed, not only will these activities continue in the centre, but rooms will be provided for a naíonra and childcare services in which there will be a focus on the Irish language through song, rhymes, music, dance and drama in Irish."
He continued: "It is vital to create a young, vibrant Irish-language community throughout the country and we must provide high quality amenities to facilitate that and to provide them and other Irish speakers with an opportunity to meet in towns outside of the Gaeltacht and to use the Irish language in buildings and in facilities that are of a high standard."
