Statement from the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs regarding freight fees on subsidised passenger services to the Aran Islands
Written by Eamon Ó Cuív Tuesday, 17 November 2009
On request from the Minister, a meeting was held in the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs today, 17 November 2009, to discuss Island Ferries Teo.’s decision to charge freight fees on subsidised passenger services. Representatives were present at the meeting from the Monitoring Committee for the three Aran Islands, from Island Ferries Teo and from the Department.
It was acknowledged that the freight volume being transported by the passenger boats had increased significantly in recent times and that there was a need to ensure that the service being provided by Island Ferries Teo. would not be exploited.
To that end, a general agreement was reached that it would be reasonable to allow passengers to carry up to 50kg free of charge while travelling on these subsidised services.
