Scéim Labhairt na Gaeilge 2008/2009
Written by Eamon Ó Cuív Monday, 25 January 2010
The Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs has published the figures for Scéim Labhairt na Gaeilge for the 2008/2009 school year.
A total of 3,515 households applied for the grant under the scheme for that school year – a slight increase of 16 households on the number of applications received under the 2007/2008 scheme.
A small number of applications – 44 – have yet to be examined. There was an increase of 148 households that secured the full grant, compared to the figures for the 2007/2008 school year. The number of households that were refused the grant increased by around 150. If the household does not reach the required standard, the Department can award a reduced grant of 50% if it believes that the household can achieve the required standard within a period of three years. If a household does not achieve that standard within the three years, they will then be refused the grant.
The objective of the Scheme is to encourage the people of the Gaeltacht to promote the use of the Irish language at home and among the general public.
“I am pleased that so many Gaeltacht households that applied for Scéim Labhairt na Gaeilge were awarded the grant. It confirms that a large number of parents are still raising their families through Irish in the Gaeltacht and we are grateful to the young people for the support that they have shown for the language and the choice that they have made to use it,” said Minister Ó Cuív, announcing the results.
