Éamon Ó Cuίv TD, Minister for Social Protection has welcomed today’s announcement (31 January 2011) by Aer Arann that West of Ireland air passengers are to benefit from new Aer Arann scheduled services from Galway to London Southend Airport.

Morning and evening flights are to be offered from March from Galway to this London airport.  Twice daily flights from Galway will operate direct four days a week and on three days a week, will operate via Waterford. London Southend Airport’s new railway facility provides a service to Stratford (for Docklands and Canary Wharf) and to central London’s Liverpool Street station.

The Galway Aer Arann London-Luton service will continue.

Welcoming the announcement from Aer Arann, Minister Ó Cuív said: “I congratulate Aer Arann on its new route announcement which provides a new service for its customers. I welcome this exciting news that West of Ireland passengers particularly those flying to London from Galway for business now have better access to the city of London via Southend Airport.

“With its new direct rail link and frequent train services, London Southend Airport is a new London gateway for Irish air travellers. Likewise those using London will have another convenient route option in to the West and this will be a great boost for our local West of Ireland economy making it easier to attract inward investment and new tourism business,” concluded Minister Ó Cuίv.
