Éamon Ó Cuív TD, Minister for Social Protection has welcomed (1 July 2010) expansion plans announced for Merit Medical, which involves an investment by the group - one of the top US medical devices firms based in Galway - of €6.7 million.

Minister Ó Cuív said: “The expansion plans by global leader Merit Medical are significant on three fronts. Not only will 100 new jobs be created by the firm’s key €6.7 million investment but it is also acquiring a €1.4 million property in Parkmore East, Co Galway to facilitate its plans, - thereby assisting our local construction and services industry.  The company also intends to establish Galway as its innovative European Centre.  These are extremely positive developments and are indicative once again of the quality workforce available in Galway, the superb education standards of our graduates and the attractiveness of our maritime city and the west as a location for US firms of the calibre of Merit Medical.”

Minister Ó Cuív added: “I would like to thank Merit Medical for its commitment to the west. Merit Medical Ireland Limited (MMIL) has been a dedicated employer in Galway since 1994.  In terms of the life sciences sector, it is a world leader. These 100 new jobs add to our reputation as a key player in this field and in fact 8 of the top 10 pharmaceutical and 15 of the top 20 medical devices companies have a base in Ireland.”

Minister Ó Cuív concluded: “This announcement for Galway follows the announcement made on Monday (28 June) of the €1.9 million worth of contracts secured by ÉireComposites Teoranta.”

The Merit Medical announcement was made today by Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Innovation, Batt O’Keeffe TD.
