The Government today re-affirmed its commitment to making arrangements to assist those most at risk of fuel poverty and it was precisely to have the least impact on vulnerable households that the Government decided to introduce the carbon tax on heating fuels at the end of the heating season (end of April), when temperatures rise and people’s need to burn fuel is reduced dramatically.

On this day the first phase of the Western Rail Corridor, that will eventually link Limerick to Sligo with connections to Galway, Castlebar and Ballina, will open. I am delighted that at last the first phase of this historic project will open and I welcome the fact that there will be five services in each directions on weekdays and that these will accommodate commuters coming and going to both Galway and Limerick City.
