Written by Eamon Ó Cuív Thursday, 04 March 2010
The Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Éamon Ó Cuív TD, will address a Tourism Forum at the inaugural Joyce Country Walking Festival in Clonbur on Friday 5 March.
Speaking today in advance of the Forum, Minister Ó Cuív said:
“The development of new Rural Recreation /Tourism Projects has great potential to benefit our rural areas. It is
crucial at this time that we exploit this potential and maximise the impact on the ground, in terms of the creation of sustainable employment that can flow from the development of strategic Recreation / Tourism projects and Walking Festivals”.
The Minister continued:
“I commend all those that have been involved in organising the Joyce Country Walking Festival and Tourism Forum. I know that this Festival will grow from strength to strength given the commitment and enthusiasm in the local area for this event. Here in Joyce’s Country, we are uniquely placed to exploit the opportunities that will flow from recreational tourism with our wonderful position on the shores of Lough Corrib, and the backdrop of the majestic uplands, unique woodlands and scenic walks such as the Seanbhóthar from Chorr na Móna to Clonbur”.
Minister Ó Cuív said he was delighted with the large numbers of walkers and delegates that had booked to attend the Tourism Forum and Walking Festival and that the event will be a showcase for walking and outdoor activities in the coming years. He also commended Co. Galway VEC for their new initiative in providing training opportunities for Countryside Guides which will ensure that members of the local community will benefit directly from the walking festival in the years ahead.
