Éamon Ó Cuív TD, Minister for Social Protection has today (22 July 2010) welcomed €8 million in support from his colleague, Minister of State Dr Martin Mansergh TD, to provide funding for works to reduce flooding from the Clare River, County Galway, in accordance with the recommendations made in the Clare River Flood Study.

Minister Éamon Ó Cuív said: “I am delighted with both Minister Mansergh’s fiscal commitment of €8 million and the fact that the planning process for this extensive scheme will begin immediately with the Office of Public Works, the Government’s lead agency for flood risk management, commencing advance works before the end of September 2010. The interim measures also outlined today by Minister Mansergh, which I believe are hugely necessary, are also extremely welcome. These measures will happen in advance of the scheme. They include the construction of flood eyes at both Crusheen Bridge and the Claregalway Bridge; road-raising at Miontach South and North and the provision of a local embankment at old Nine Arches Bridge near the N17, in addition to other changes.   These welcome announcements are very positive developments for the people living and working in Claregalway.”
